Expected Impact
Environmental
With a potential of up to 86% lower emissions, according to project assessments, compared with fossil-based equivalents, the process is designed to minimise waste, directing by-products toward further use rather than disposal.
Industrial
Retrofitting offers a replicable model that is faster and more resource-efficient than building new infrastructure, requiring up to 15% less capital investment than a greenfield plant, and provides a template other biorefineries can follow.
Economic
The project is expected to generate over €40 million in turnover, strengthening a regional bio-based value chain centred in the Netherlands, built around a resource that was previously underused.
Societal
The retrofitted facility is expected to create around 63 new jobs and re-skill 67 employees, giving existing staff the opportunity to build new skills as production shifts toward a more sustainable model.
